THE SPUD LITE STORY
The story begins in 1936 with the Zerella family establishing Zerella Holdings to further drive their passion about vegetables and fresh Australian produce on your plate.
Spud Lite is grown in the heart of the Murray Mallee in South Australia and has been grown there for around 10 years, thriving in harsh but forgiving climate.
The variety grown for Spud Lite was found in a quest for a great tasting potato by owner Mark Pye. Mark Pye is originally from a small farming town in the South Island of New Zealand where they are spoilt for a variety of great tasting potatoes. Therefore, when he and his wife Fiona came across to Australia to start their dream of growing potatoes for a new and different market they were dissatisfied with the taste of the varieties offered.
This caused the “around the world” hunt for a great tasting potato, that is suitable for all cooking and will thrive in the hot climate of the Mallee. This great discovery was made in the middle of a paddock in Denmark, where he was sent to dig a number of varieties that looked promising and ticked all of the boxes on this list. Here is where the journey began to bring this delicious variety back to Australia and create a brand for all of Australia.
Spud Lite is now offered in three different packs – 1.5kg medium potatoes, great for mashing and roasting for the whole family – the 750gm baby pack, a delicious option for boiling for those summer potato salads – the 350gm micro pack, the time saver option which you can pop into the microwave.
